| A restored circa 1795 townhouse in the heart of Baltimore's historic Fells Point,
modernized and tastefully furnished, available for short-term rental.
Architecture: This early Federal style house (circa 1795) was originally built as a 2 1/2 story structure, one room deep, with a slanted roof and dormer. In the mid-19th century, the roof was raised to 3 full stories, and a 2 story rear addition was built. The original sloped roofline is still visible today on an exposed brick wall in the 3rd floor bedroom.
The façade features carved stone lintels, which are quite rare in Baltimore, plus two cornices -- the original stone cornice above the second floor, and an ornate wooden cornice at the present roofline.
The brick is laid in Flemish bond on the first 2 levels, and in running bond on the 3rd level, attesting to the different periods of construction. The unusually shaped thin bricks found in several areas of the house are thought to have been transported from Holland as ballast in the hull of sailing ships.
Modern Amenities: While the house still retains the character of a 200+ year old home, the living space has been completely updated for today's lifestyle. Materials utilized in the renovation include oak, slate, and ceramic flooring, Williamsburg paints, Baldwin brass hardware, and custom cabinetry.
The first floor features a living/dining room with a sofa bed, powder/utility room with washer and dryer, and a full modern kitchen with all necessary appliances and utensils. The kitchen includes a charming eat-in area with a cathedral ceiling and skylight. Off the kitchen is an enclosed private courtyard, with outdoor dining area and gas grill.
The second floor has a spacious multi-purpose room which is fully equipped to serve as a comfortable living room or office. There is a queen size futon, so that the room can also be used as a bedroom. The bathroom includes a spacious ceramic-tiled shower. A loft overlooking the kitchen area is a pleasant reading space, and includes a futon which can serve as a double bed.
The master bedroom on the third floor has a queen size bed, plus a wall of bookcases, with a varied selection of reading material.
FELLS POINT: The National Register Historic District of Fells Point is a vibrant maritime community, located just east of Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor. Established in 1730, the area served as the city's original port and was the center of a thriving shipbuilding industry.
Many of the existing homes and commercial structures date to the 18th and 19th century, and have been diligently restored to preserve their quaint charm and historic character. The Robert Long House, circa 1765, is Baltimore's oldest surviving urban residence, and is now maintained as a museum.
The cobblestone streets of Fells Point are alive with restaurants, taverns, small theaters, galleries, antique and vintage clothing shops, and many other unique establishments. The neighborhood offers an eclectic mixture of residential and commercial cultures and interests, featuring a fascinating melting pot of fine restaurants and inexpensive ethnic eateries, renowned artists and offbeat characters, upscale townhouses and modest working-class rowhomes, all existing in harmony side by side.
Fells Point is a short walk or ride to the Inner Harbor, Little Italy and Canton. The convenient and enjoyable water taxis are a favorite means of transportation for Fells Point residents and visitors.
